ADT Security

The ADT Property and Resident Management apps are platforms designed for property staff, technicians, and residents to manage smart home devices and streamline property operations. For staff, the app enables managing devices, accessing property data, and communicating with residents. For residents, it offers seamless control of smart home devices and quick support for troubleshooting and maintenance requests.

Role

As a UX/UI Designer, my role was to enhance ADT’s app experience by designing solutions that address user pain points while adhering to ADT’s aspirational and empowering brand voice. I worked within a fast-paced startup environment to design features and user flows based on assigned user stories, ensuring alignment with tight deadlines. Responsibilities included user research, competitive analysis, streamlining workflows, integrating AI-driven features like virtual assistants and task scheduling, and crafting in-flight designs to support the app’s pre-launch development.

Challenges

Property staff, technicians, and residents often face friction managing smart home devices across multi-unit properties. Existing solutions lacked intuitive interfaces and efficient ways to surface critical information.

Understanding the landscape

To grasp the evolving smart home ecosystem, we analyzed market trends, user pain points, and competitor offerings.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, I crafted a design strategy focused on streamlining device management, integrating AI-powered tools like virtual assistants and task scheduling.

Key Goals

1. Enhance usability for property staff, technicians, and residents.

2. Incorporate AI to address pain points like troubleshooting, scheduling, and personalized onboarding.

3. Align the app design with ADT’s aspirational brand tone while maintaining functionality.

4. Develop competitive insights to identify gaps and opportunities in the smart home IoT landscape.

Research Process

To inform design decisions, I conducted the following:

Competitive Analysis

Reviewed competitors like PointCentral, Quext, and Rently to understand industry standards, strengths, and weaknesses.

Knowledge Base

Collaborating with product managers, designers, and technicians, we identified key workflows, such as device installations and troubleshooting, and pinpointed pain points. This holistic approach ensured alignment with ADT’s brand and paved the way for user-centered design improvements.

Workshops & Stakeholder Feedback

Held collaborative workshops to ideate AI-driven features, define priorities, and align design concepts with business objectives.

Solutions

The product was essentially acquired by ADT, so some of the work included reevaluating the product to align with ADT’s standards while still pushing innovation forward.

Simplified User Journeys

  • Streamlined critical flows like syncing resident data with PMI integrations and troubleshooting smart devices.

  • Designed clear visual hierarchies and actionable prompts to guide users, reducing confusion and enhancing efficiency.

Smart Scheduling

Automated repetitive maintenance tasks to free up staff time and ensure consistency.

Training with Context

Personalized onboarding resources tailored to property roles and devices, reducing friction for new users.

Brand Alignment

Created subtle, brand-aligned UI refinements to reflect ADT’s empowering and calm tone of voice. For example:

  • Reworked empty states and refined color and states.

  • Ensured visuals felt professional and consistent with ADT’s values.

Competitive Differentiation

  • Identified gaps in competitor platforms and proposed features like proactive AI sentiment analysis, which aligns with ADT’s focus on productivity and process improvement.

  • Positioned ADT’s platform as a leader in combining security with smart home convenience.

Motion Studies

Working with engineering to define some new interactive states for that delightful moments within the experience.

Outcome

  • Delivered UX/UI recommendations that improved usability and aligned the product with ADT’s brand values.

  • Enhanced the product’s competitive positioning by introducing AI-powered tools that addressed user frustrations and operational inefficiencies.

  • Developed a scalable framework for integrating new features while maintaining a cohesive experience.

Reflection

This project reinforced the value of user-centric design and cross-functional collaboration. By balancing the needs of residents, staff, and ADT’s brand identity, we created a solution that was both practical and aspirational.

Next Steps

As a designer, I’m excited to explore future possibilities for expanding AI’s role in proactive smart home management and refining experiences that empower users across diverse roles.
